About the research and the project:

In this position you will execute projects in the innovation areas associated to the energy transition and digitalization (incl. e.g., DER management and integration, implementation of new grid services and digitalization concepts, implementation of solutions for increased power quality, development and integration of EV charging solutions, advanced monitoring, and maintenance strategies) .

Primary function:

The Specialist will report to the Regional Team Lead Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn and will help to identify key technical gaps and influence the technology roadmap for Eaton’s power systems products and services.

The position is a technical position and will involve the complete range of technical responsibilities including design, implementation, and integration of the envisioned solutions.

Further goals/responsibilities for this role are:

  • Develop and design new technologies in both AC and DC power systems and help Eaton's products and services to differentiate and lead in the emerging market.

  • Design, implement and validate (SIL &CHIL) control and optimization concepts for a wide range of energy system applications.

  • Implement innovative and state-of-the-art concepts and solutions into prototypes & pilots and perform feasibility studies.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups.

  • Support ERL Aachen/Bonn team in building new research programs.

  • Innovate, invent, and challenge state-of-art design & processes by securing critical intellectual properties through patents and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.

  • Serve as Principal Investigator during project proposal preparation, project execution and reporting.

We would like you to bring:

  • PhD degree (or PhD candidate close to graduation ) in Electrical Engineering/Mechanical engineering or related field from an accredited institution. Master degree in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or related field.

  • Experience in developing and designing technology solutions with a proven track record of developing high-quality technology.

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: EV charging, vehicle-to-grid/home, power systems automation and grid-intelligence algorithms, building energy management systems, fuel-cell, and hydrogen systems for stationary and/or transportation applications (vehicle, aerospace)

  • Strong experience in integration and deployment of control and management algorithms in the field tests and demonstration pilots.

  • Expertise in integration of generation and storage technologies in demonstration sites.

What skills would be evaluated:

Experience in demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid, buildings, and their integration to power grid operations.

  • Experience in demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid, buildings, and their integration to power grid operations.

  • Experience in advanced control and optimization methods to address the emerging R&D challenges in modern energy systems.

  • Experience using one or more of power systems simulation software MATLAB / Simulink

  • Experience in real-time simulations, hardware-in-the loop, and power hardware in the loop such as OPAL-RT, RTDS or Typhoon
